Leon and Cerro Negro

Leon is a historic colonial city with a wealth of cultural and historical treasures. Leons cathedral is a must-visit, and it is the final resting place of the famous Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario. Other attractions include the Museum of Legends and Traditions, the Ruben Dario Museum, and several churches. The original location of the city, Leon Viejo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The León department is home to famous sandy beaches such as Poneloya and Las Penitas. The island of Juan Venada, with its lush mangrove forests, is a sanctuary for various species of animals and thousands of birds. Puerto Sandino is a favorite among surfers and hosts several cultural celebrations like the Palo de Mayo festival. Cerro Negro is a popular destination for hiking and sandboarding.
